Psychic Healing

Len Nuttall

I heard recently that Naina, a psychic healer is going to be in Chicago soon.  Do you think she is really able to heal people?  My health is not good but I have no insurance and cannot afford to go to the hospital.

It is easy to understand how someone in your position would find it very attractive to believe that your illnesses, whatever they are could be healed by magic.  Unfortunately there is no reason to think that this person, or anyone else who makes these claims, can actually perform any magic except to magically transform your money into her money.

All through history there have been people who have claimed to be able to diagnose and heal diseases with psychic powers.  In ancient times there was very little understanding about why people got sick and why they did or did not get recover from their illnesses.

Psichinis gydymas

Len Nuttall

14 amiuje is poiris priauk katastrof. Kadangi mons jau buvo visikai pamir, kad ligos sukeliamos fizikai ir fizikai gydomos, jie nebekreip jokio dmesio sanitarij savo miesteliuose bei kaimuose. 1347 1351 metais, maras (bubonic plague), iplits blusose, iurkse, pelse, kapus nuvar tredal Europos gyventoj.

Daugeliu atvej tie mons net atsisako pademonstruoti savo galias mokslikai kontroliuojamoje aplinkoje. O tais retais atvejais, kai sutinka (pademonstruoti), jie patiria neskm. Bet jie visada turi pasiaikinim; paprastai kaltina netikint jais stebtoj, kuris (savo netikjimu) sutrukdius parodyti adt stebukl.  Aikina, kad i arti stebintysis sukuria blogos energijos lauk, neleidiant jiems tinkamai pasirodyti. Liepkite jam pasivalgyti sekcijoje, pavadintoje Milijono doleri pasilymas (Million Dollar Challenge). Po to, kai toks (tokia)  laims milijon doleri, galsite jo (jos) paadus  pairti rimtai.

Kai kurie mons paklaus: O kas ia blogo? Kodl negalima suteikti vilties tiems, kuri nebeada igydyti tikroji medicina?

Tikjimas psichinmis galiomis atsiranda i nemokikumo ir sielos tingulio.

**Con artist- nusikaltlio tipas, kuris kalba savo auk atiduoti pinigus. Paprastai auka galvoja, kad ji (tikinta auka) i viso to turs naudos, bet kaip tik to ir siekia "con artist"- kad auka taip jaustsi. Ir kiekvienas, kuris galvoja, kad nieko neduodamas, k nors gaus, kvailina save. ia nieko nedavimas reikia tikjim, kad duodamas maai, gaus daug.

Bacteria and viruses were unknown.  So were genes, and even the concept that different foods contained different nutrients was only dimly suspected.  The most common idea was that evil spirits caused disease, and that in order to cure it one had to somehow communicate with the spirit world.  When an ancient healer prescribed herbal poultices and teas to treat illness, people attributed the healing power of these herbs to magical powers, not the interaction of chemicals in the herbs with the chemistry of the patients body and the microscopic organisms causing the disease.  But magic is just another way of saying We dont know how it happens.  People hate to feel ignorant so they make up stories and call it magic.

A thousand years before the time of Christ, a Greek physician named Hippocrates became the father of modern medicine when he understood that all disease and all cures had physical causes.  The spirit world was not involved, either in making people sick or making them well.  Later the Roman Empire made enormous advances in public health by understanding that many diseases could be prevented by simple sanitation.  They built aqueducts to provide clean water and sewers to carry away wastes.  They built public bathhouses and for the first time in history, cleanliness became a normal part of European life.

When the Roman Empire fell in the fifth century, people slowly forgot what they had learned.  The Catholic Church re-introduced the idea that disease was caused by magic; only they called it Gods will.  If somebody got sick, either God or the Devil was responsible.  Disease was considered part of Gods plan, and the suffering caused by disease was something God wanted us to endure on the road to salvation.  Curing or preventing disease by any means other than prayer was evil.

In the 14th century, this viewpoint caused catastrophe.  Because people had forgotten that diseases had physical causes and physical cures, they no longer paid much attention to things like sanitation in their towns and villages.  In the years 1347 1351, bubonic plague, which was spread by the fleas on rats and mice, killed over a third of the population of Europe.

Medicine today has learned a great deal about the causes of disease and different types of treatments.  We have learned that infectious diseases are caused by microscopic organisms that invade our bodies.  Other conditions have other causes like bad genetics or bad nutrition or harmful chemicals in the environment.  Even psychological and emotional diseases like depression or alcoholism have their roots in the physical chemistry of our brains.   Of course there are many things that we still dont know and many diseases we cannot cure, but the way forward lies in greater understanding of physical causes and cures.  People who ask us to believe in psychic healing are asking us to turn the clock back to the thirteenth century and pretend that science has never existed.  Europe did that once and paid a very high price.

There may be some people who genuinely believe, however mistakenly, that they have the power to diagnose or heal with their minds or touch.  But most so-called psychic healers are out-and-out charlatans.  They know they cannot heal you and are only after your money.  There has never been one single case where it has been scientifically verified that a person had the power to heal through psychic means.  In most cases these people will not even try to demonstrate their powers in a controlled scientific setting.  On the rare occasions when they do try, they fail.  But they always have some excuse, usually in some way blaming the unbelieving observer for the fact that they were unable to perform as promised.  If you are watching them too closely, it evidently creates bad energy that makes it impossible for them to work.  A thinking person might wonder if cancer or diabetes also creates bad energy.  The James Randi Educational Foundation has a standing offer of one million dollars to anyone who can scientifically prove that they have even the smallest psychic power.  Before she became famous as an advisor to former Lithuanian president Paksas, Lena Lolisvili tried to win this prize.  (We will write more about this next week.)  The next time somebody tries to tell you they have psychic abilities of any kind, ask them to go to this website:  http://www.randi.org .  Tell them to look for the section called Million Dollar Challenge.  Once they have collected the million dollars you can start taking their claim seriously.

Many people will ask What is the harm?  Why is it bad to offer hope to someone who has been told that real medicine cannot cure them?  That is missing the point.  Hope is never bad, and miracles do sometimes happen, but those miracles come from within.  Our bodies sometimes have an amazing ability to heal themselves and real hope is part of the process.  Hope should come from truth, not from lies or fraud.  But more important, so-called healing by psychics often takes the place of real medical treatment.  A seriously ill person who believes the charlatans claims is doing himself and his family a great deal of harm.  By the time he finally goes to a doctor, a condition that was treatable earlier might now be fatal.

Belief in psychic powers ultimately comes from ignorance and mental laziness.  Real knowledge is hard, both to acquire and to use.  It is tempting to take the easy way; to say that it is not necessary to do the hard work and studying it takes to learn things.  A lazy mind loves the idea that by being special, in tune with the universe, it can just know things.  And if we let ourselves believe that another persons specialness allows her to tell our futures or heal our illnesses, we are asking for trouble.  Con artists have always known that the easiest person to steal from is the one who thinks he can get something for nothing.  Likewise, the psychic charlatan looks for victims who believe there is a something for nothing path to health, love or wisdom.  If we decide to believe these people, we will have only ourselves to blame for the consequences.
