Where have I been?

Regina Nuttall

Some of you know me from my previous work. I have written for many publications, both here in the U.S. And back in Lithuania. Until autumn of 2006, my husband Len and I operated the reginospalepe.com website. At that time I disappeared from public view. I think it is time to get back into the game, but maybe a little differently than before.

Kur buvau dingus?

Regina Nuttall

Kai kurie mane pastate i ankstesni raini periodiniams leidiniams Lietuvoje ir keliems ia, Amerikoje. Dabar, kai jau beveik du metus "nepakabinam" nieko naujo, suvestins rodo maesnius skaiius.

2006- j rudeni dingau i visuomens akiraio. Manau, kad jau laikas sugrti. Taiau viskas yra kiek pasikeit.

Kokia tokios ilgos pertraukos prieastis?

Kuo paprasiau ir trumpiau kalbant, vis t laik gyvenau, mgindama nenumirti. 2006- j vasar man pasidar sunku kvpuoti ir vietos gydytojas neteisingai diagnozavo astm. I tikrj manyje vystsi mi leukemijos forma, anglikai vadinama AML ("guglinau", naudodama tas tris raides)- itin pavojinga ir agresyvi liga.

Prajau keturias stiprias chemoterapijas (pirmoji devynias paras be joki pertrauk, kitos po penkias), kurios reikalavo daugyb kart grti ligonin ir ten pasilikti (ch, kaip nesinordavo), devynis mnesius praleidau lovoje, ir net negalvojau apie raym.

Prajus pavasar pradjau vl jaustis savimi.

Dang udeng debesys, pabir lietaus laai nesugadino nuotaikos. Mes net nemginome iekoti pastogs. Taip graiai lijo, abi juokms, atvert lapius veidus dang ir grme viena kitos perlytus drabuius.

Prajus kuriam laikui, igirdome apie ernobilyje vykusi nelaim.

Dabar jau aiku, kad lietus atne didesn pavoj, nes iplov i oro daug smulkui radiokatyvi dulki daleli, kurios nusdo ant mans ir ant visko aplinkui. Prisimenu vakare pykino, skaudjo galv, o mano mayl vm.

Jeigu Lietuva i viso kur nors skelbia sergani leukemija statistik, tai man nepavyko jos aptikti.

Ilgja laukiani viet geresnse ligoninse sraai. Vyriausyb neskiria pakankamai pinig, reikaling btinam gydymui. Kai paklausiau vienos daug patirties turinios onkologs kodl ita informacija yra slepiama nuo Lietuvos gyventoj, ji atsak" Ar juokaujate? mones apimt panika".

Aptikau dom straipsn 1990 met balandio 28 dienos Nju Jork Taims (New York Times) laikratyje..Tuo metu soviet sjunga igyveno savo paskutines dienas (net mes tuo metu nesupratome). Anuometin tarybin vyriausyb oficialiai niekada neskelb panaios informacijos.

Straipsnyje, ispausdintame vos keturiems metams prajus po ernobylio avarijos sakoma, jog kai kurie tyrimai paliudijo keturis milijonus moni Ukrainoje, Baltarusijoje ir Rusijoje tebegyvenant ant radioaktyviomis mediagomis ukrstos ems. Atkreipkite dmes: utertos, laikantis sovietini standart.

Tame paiame straipsnyje tvirtinama, kad radiacijos paveiktose vietovse susirgimai skydliauks viu buvo 5-10 kart didesni u prast, o vaik sergamumas leukemija padidjs 2- 4 kartus.

Straipsnyje nurodomas kaimas Ukrainoje (angl. variante Polesskoye), kuriame tuo metu gyveno vir 13,000 gyventoj. Ten em siek milinik radiacijos lyg- vir 40 Kuri (Ci, radiokatyvumo vienetas, angl. Curie).

A to nesuprantu.

Radioaktyviomis mediagomis ukrstas dirvoemis stebuklingu bdu netampa variu vien dl to, kad pasikeit vyriausyb.

Sergani leukemija skaiius netiktinai iaugo prajus 5 - 15 metams po bombardavimo. is laikotarpis tem pasibaigs.

Kodl Lietuvoje tiek daug dabar sergani leukemija? O gal sergani leukemija ne tiek daug, kiek atrodo?

Gal daug kit dalyk.

Sunku suprasti kas atsitiko viduje buvusios soviet sjungos. Nra joki ra, joki patikim dokument, nurodani kokios ries chemikalais ar radiacija buvome kasdien veikiami, neskaitant ernobylio. Nra pakeniamos informacijos kokie radiacijos kiekiai nikrito kokiose vietovse.

Viena aiku: mano kartos lietuviai augo nepaprastai apnuodytoje, pavojingoje aplinkoje.

Gali bti, kad ernobylis tra laas vandens piln kibir. Noriau perskaityti, igirsti daugiau, bet turiu blog nuojaut, kad iuo atveju klausim yra ymiai daugiau, negu kada nors bus manoma surasti atsakym.

(Lithuanian Text)

What was the reason for the break? Simply put, I was trying not to die. In summer 2006, I was having trouble breathing, and my local physician thought I had asthma. That turned out to be dramatically incorrect. I had developed a form of leukemia called AML, a very aggressive and dangerous form of the disease. I went through an intensive regime of chemotherapy, which required multiple hospital stays, and pretty much made it impossible to even think about writing. It has only been in the last couple of months that I have started to really feel like myself again.

Like many people in similar situations, I wanted to know why this thing had happened to me. Why did I get this terrible disease instead of somebody else. My husband did some research and found that the two known causes of AML are exposure to certain chemicals, especially benzene, and exposure to radiation. Like many of you, I grew up in the time when Lithuania was not an independent country, but a part of the Soviet Union. We could have been, and probably were exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals that our government never told us about. I don't and never will know what those chemicals were.

But I remember one beautiful April day in 1986. My little daughter and I were out working in the garden. It was one of the first warm days of the spring and everybody was feeling happy. Some clouds came over and it started to rain, but that did not ruin our mood. We did not even try to find shelter. It was a beautiful warm rain, and we laughed as the drops splashed on our faces and soaked our clothes. It was days later before we finally heard about the accident at Chernobyl.

Was my disease related to this day? Even under the best of circumstances there would be no way to know for sure. It is impossible to say with certainty exactly what causes any single case of any cancer. The only way we can know is statistically. We can say that almost all cases of lung cancer are caused by smoking, but almost all is not the same as one hundred percent. We may say that 95% of cases are from smoking, but we cannot say which individual cases make up the other 5%.

Chernobyl-related cancers are far more difficult to track down. If Lithuania publicly publishes any statistics at all about leukemia, I was not able to find them. It is not just Lithuania either. Other affected countries like Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia also act like there is no problem. Are they right? Is all the Chernobyl talk much ado about nothing? I have spoken with doctors from Lithuania who said just the opposite. Leukemia wards are full to overflowing. There are even waiting lists at the better hospitals. There isn't even close to enough money to provide needed treatments. I asked one knowledgeable doctor why this information hasn't been made public. She replied, "Are you kidding? People would panic."

I came across an interesting article from the New York Times. It was dated April 28, 1990. At that time, the Soviet Union was in it's last days (even though we didn't realize it at the time). It was broke and desperately needed outside help to deal with the situation. The gist of the article was that the environmental and health problems caused by Chernobyl were far greater than had been previously released. Some of the specific revelations were that four million people in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were living on contaminated ground. And remember that is contaminated by Soviet standards.

December 2006

They also stated that in the affected area, rates of thyroid cancer were 5-10 times normal, and the rate of childhood leukemia was 2-4 times normal. They mentioned Polesskoye, a village in Ukraine with 13,000 inhabitants. The ground there had a radiation level of 40 curies, an enormous amount. Dr Anthony Robbins, a professor of public health at Boston University who had recently returned from the Soviet Union said, "Everyone you talk to says that every time they look, the situation is worse than it was before."

Somehow though, as the Soviet Union dissolved and reorganized into independent countries, all discussion of Chernobyl-related problems vanished. I don't understand that. Contaminated soil doesn't magically become clean because there is a new government. Research done in recent years shows a clear relationship between Chernobyl and thyroid cancer, but not so much with other cancers. Most studies concede however that it is difficult to get accurate statistics from the countries involved, so the lack of a demonstrated link does not mean that there is no link.

A study done in Sweden in 2004 shows some interesting results. The amount of radioactivity that fell in Sweden was fairly well measured. They were able to demonstrate that the number of cases of all types of cancer were noticeably larger in areas that had received the most fallout, but that there was no demonstrable connection between the fallout and any particular type of cancer. They were not sure why this was, but speculated that the radiation may have made existing tumors more aggressive and dangerous, rather than creating new ones.

There is a lot of data from studying the Japanese atomic bomb survivors from World War II. The big increase in leukemia came 5 - 15 years after exposure. That period is over now. Why do so many Lithuanians have leukemia now? Maybe the leukemia rate is not really as high as it looks. Maybe radiation from a bomb is different from radiation from fallout. Maybe there are other environmental factors causing the disease. Some recent studies have shown a relationship between air quality and leukemia. Maybe that is a factor. Maybe many things.

Trying to know what happened inside the former Soviet Union is difficult. There are no records of what kinds of chemicals and/or radiation we were subjected to in our daily lives, not counting Chernobyl. There is no good data on how much radiation fell on what areas. And it is difficult to know how accurate the statistics are that researchers are working with. It is clear that Lithuanians of my generation grew up in an extremely polluted, dangerous environment. Maybe Chernobyl is just a drop in the bucket. I would like to have more answers, but I'm afraid that there are far more questions at this point than answers.
