Troubles for Bush

  Len Nuttall

The last year has seen a dramatic decline in the standing of American president George Bush, and the past couple of weeks may be the most troublesome yet.  Bush has denied knowing disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has recently pled guilty to charges of corruption and has agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors.  Now a photo has surfaced showing Bush and his top advisor, Karl Rove meeting with Abramoff.  The White House has said it does not know how Abramoff got into the meeting or what was discussed there.

Neramus laikas Buui

Len Nuttall

Dar vienas: Michael Brown, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)- Federalins greitos pagalbos organizavimo agentros- galva, jau kelis kartus kritikuotas u elges stichins nelaims uragano Katrinos metu, Senato komitetui paliudijo, jog laiku informavo baltuosius Rmus; padar tai tuoj pat, kai pylimai prajusi vasar New Orleans pradjo griti.

Grup respublikon kongresmen (paties Bush partijos) vykd tyrim, aikindamiesi kokios klaidos padarytos uragano Katrina metu. J praneime, paskelbtame prajusi savait, baisiai kritkuojama Bush administracija (Bush Administrations) u tai, kaip veik tos krizs metu. Pavyzdiui, prajus spal, duodamas interviu milijonus irovi turinio televizijos kanalo ABC Naujienos (ABC News) urnalistei  Diane Sawyer, prezidentas Bush kalbjo, kad niekas neturjo net minties, jog pylimai gali sugriti ir kad prireiks masins gelbtoj pagalbos. Taiau komiteto narys atstovas Rep. Chris Shays, R-Conn., sak: "Prezidentas aikiausiai pateik blog informacij.

Naujien media turi teis, tiksliau pareig, aktyviai iekoti klausim, veriani vyriausyb pasijausti nepatogiai. Savimi itin patenkinta vyriausyb, sitikinusi, kad viskas, k ji daro yra teisinga nra tinkama vyriausyb laisviems monms. Rinkimai nesukuria demokratijos. Laisvos alies mons turi tai daryti (kurti demokratij) savo pai naudai, kiekvien dien reikalaudami i savo vadov bti atvirai atsakingais u visus veiksmus.

Troubles for Bush

The last year has seen a dramatic decline in the standing of American president George Bush, and the past couple of weeks may be the most troublesome yet.  Bush has denied knowing disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who has recently pled guilty to charges of corruption and has agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors.  Now a photo has surfaced showing Bush and his top advisor, Karl Rove meeting with Abramoff.  The White House has said it does not know how Abramoff got into the meeting or what was discussed there.

Next Michael Brown, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), who had been severely criticized about his handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, testified to a Senate committee that he had informed the White House as soon as levies started to fail in New Orleans last summer.  Bush, in explaining why the federal government had been so slow to react, had previously stated that he was not aware of the breaches until days after they occurred.  Brown also complained that his immediate boss, Michael Chertoff, Director of Homeland Security had been so focused on terrorism that he failed to pay attention to the natural disasters of last summer.

A group of Republican Congressmen (Bushs own party) has been conducting an investigation into what went wrong with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort.  Their report, which was issued last week, was highly critical of the Bush Administrations handling of the crisis.  For example, president Bush, in an interview with Diane Sawyer of ABC News last September said that nobody had any idea the levees would break, and that a massive rescue effort would be needed.  But committee member Rep. Chris Shays, R-Conn., said: "The president was clearly misinformed. We had a tabletop exercise Hurricane Pam that predicted at a level 4 [hurricane], the dam was going to be breached."

The report continued, "If this is what happens when we have advance warning, we shudder to imagine the consequences when we do not", referring to a possible terror attack. "Four-and-a-half years after 9/11, America is still not ready for prime time.

There is more.  In the upcoming issue of Foreign Affairs magazine, Paul Pillar, who was the CIAs National Intelligence Officer for the Middle East and Southeast Asia from 2000 to 2005, has written an article stating that the Bush Administration misused intelligence in trying to justify the invasion of Iraq.  Bush repeatedly said that there was a connection between Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, even though there was not a single intelligence analysis that came to this conclusion.  These charges are not new, but the fact that they come from such a highly placed individual who very likely had access to all the intelligence data that Bush himself did is very significant.

Lewis Libby, who has been indicted for his role in revealing the identity of a CIA undercover operative, has now stated that he had authorization from his superiors to do what he did.  He did not name names, but his superiors would appear to be Dick Cheney and George Bush.

To make matters even worse, Vice-President Dick Cheney shot one of his companions in a hunting accident last weekend, and the news was not released for over 24 hours.  Even then it was not the White House that released the story, it was the owner of the ranch where the accident occurred.  It has become normal procedure for this administration, which never likes to see any negative information about itself in the press, to say as little as possible.  But the American people and news media are getting tired of this game of hide the facts and are at long last asking some difficult questions.

There are a lot of charges being made public now and although it seems that there is considerable substance to some or all of them, there is a lot that has not yet been proved.  Some people wonder why the US allows such things to be printed.  The answer is simple.  This is the only way a real democracy can work.  Unless the people of a country actively demand answers to their questions, they will surely never get them.  Although there are times when government officials need to operate in secrecy, if they are not publicly called upon at some point in time to prove that their actions were correct, this secrecy will inevitably grow until it has consumed the freedom of the country.  Even during wartime, government officials need to know that what they do will eventually be made public and they will have to answer for their actions.  The news media has the right, even the duty, to seek out questions that make the government uncomfortable.  A government that is too satisfied with itself, too sure that everything it does is right, is not the government of a free people.  Elections do not create democracy.  The people of a free country need to do that for themselves every day by demanding that their leaders be openly responsible for their actions.
