Freedom of the Press

There was a recent report by an organization called Reporters Without Borders that claimed to rank the degree of journalistic freedom in various countries around the world.  It gave the US a relatively low ranking, mostly because a reporter for the New York Times named Judith Miller spent several months in jail for refusing to disclose who gave her certain information that ironically she never even published.  Does the US deserve to be criticized for putting her in jail?  To be honest, it looks a little strange, especially by this particular organization.

Spaudos laisv

Regina Nuttall

Organizacija, pasivadinusi Reporters Without Borders (reporteriai be sien) neseniai iplatino praneim, kuriame prisiekinja nustat urnalistins laisvs lyg vairiose pasaulio alyse. Srae palyginti ema vieta skiriama JAV, i dalies dl to, kad  New York Times reporter  Judith Miller, atsisakiusi nurodyti kas jai suteik tam tikr informacij (kuri niekada taip ir nebuvo ispausdinta) kelis mnesius praleido kaljime.

Ar i ties JAV nusipelno tokios kritikos iuo atveju?

Jis t vard parinko ne iaip sau skamba labai panaiai kaip ir kitos prancz organizacijos Gydytojai be sien(Doctors Without Borders), kuri yra be galo gerai usirekomendavusi visame pasaulyje, puikiai atlieka savo darb, ilikdama politikai neutralia.

Kodl i organizacija (RSF), jau seniai kaltinama tuo, jog usiima propagandos platinimu, prisidengdama JAV interesais, siekia taip sureikminti Judith Miller atvej?

Nordami atsakyti turime geriau aptarti jos atsidrimo kaljime prieastis. Dl daugybs sudting aplinkybi, kuri vis nemanoma ia aptarti, Libby tikjo, kad pagarsins t fakt, jog Wilsono mona dirba CIA, jam (Wilsonui) pakenks.

is planas suveik atvirkiai paiam Libby, taip pat Busho administracijai, ypatingajam bylos tyrjui (special investigator) Patrick Fitzgerald, kuris buvo pasirys surasti tokios ypatingai svarbios informacijos nutekjimo altin. urnalist Miller atsisak bendradarbiauti  Fitzgeraldo  vykdomame tyrime (visi kiti  reporteriai, iskyrus j vienintel, bendradarbiavo); tai tada Miller ir atsidr kaljime.

I pirmo vilgsnio RSF teiginys, jog urnalist mgino apsaugoti savo informatori, gali pasirodyti teisingas.

Tokios organizacijos kaip RSF (Reporteriai be sien, angl Reporters without borders) gali kalbti k tik nori.

Freedom of the Press

Regina Nuttall

There was a recent report by an organization called Reporters Without Borders that claimed to rank the degree of journalistic freedom in various countries around the world.  It gave the US a relatively low ranking, mostly because a reporter for the New York Times named Judith Miller spent several months in jail for refusing to disclose who gave her certain information that ironically she never even published.  Does the US deserve to be criticized for putting her in jail?  To be honest, it looks a little strange, especially by this particular organization.

The actual name of the France-based group is Reporters Sans Frontieres, or RSF.  It was founded about twenty years ago by a man named Robert Menard.  He gave it a name that sounds very similar to another French organization (Doctors Without Borders) that has a tremendous reputation for good work and political neutrality around the world.  RSF however has not achieved the same level of respect.  It has become famous for criticizing countries that are unfriendly to the US, such as Cuba and Venezuela.  In fact, it was recently revealed that a large part of its financial support comes from the US government.  It is also closely allied with anti-Castro Cuban exile groups in Florida.  Why would a group that has been accused so often of being a front for US interests want to bring so much attention to the Judith Miller case?

To get an answer we need to look a little closer at why Miller was in jail.  In the days before the invasion of Iraq, a man named Lewis Libby, who was the top assistant to US Vice-President Dick Cheney evidently gave Miller and several other friendly reporters information that the wife of Joseph Wilson was a CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) agent.  Wilson had recently published a strong criticism of part of the Bush Administrations reason for going to war.  For very complicated reasons that I wont try to explain here, Libby felt that making public the fact that Wilsons wife worked for the CIA would discredit Wilson.  This plan backfired on Libby and the Bush Administration and a special investigator, Patrick Fitzgerald, was appointed to find out who had leaked this sensitive information.  Miller refused to cooperate with Fitzgeralds investigation and was put in jail.

In a small way, this case is what RSF says it is, a journalist trying to protect the source of her information.  But if you dig a little deeper, you will find that it is exactly the opposite.  The laws that allow journalists to protect the sources of their information are designed to protect the little guy.  They are meant to make it possible for someone who has information to get that information to the public.  In this case Miller was trying to use these laws to protect the Bush Administration against democracy.  Libby was not trying to get an important story in front of the public.  He had plenty of other ways of doing that.  He was trying to use the press to achieve the Bush Administrations political goals.  In the process he destroyed a womans career, and possibly put lives in danger all around the world.  In the end, putting Judith Miller in jail advanced the cause of press freedom.

Organizations like RSF are free to say whatever they want.  Thats what freedom of the press is about.  It is important however to look at who is talking and what their motivations are before we just blindly believe.
