What Thanksgiving Means

Regina and Len Nuttall

Thanksgiving is a distinctive holiday in American culture.  In a time when most holidays are associated with spending money on piles of gifts or flashy celebrations, Thanksgiving is still mostly a simple holiday.  It is a time when extended families get together for the day, eat, drink, talk, watch football games or movies together, then do some more eating and drinking and talking.  In America many families live a long ways apart, and dont see each other very often.  Thanksgiving is the time of the year when it is most traditional to travel and visit out of town relatives.  The busiest day of the year at most American airports is usually the day before Thanksgiving.  The name Thanksgiving says exactly what the day is about giving thanks for the things we have in life.

K reikia Padkos vent

Taiau iuo baisiu laiku Lincoln papra alies gyventoj vien dien praleisti, stengiantis suvokti, u k jie nort padkoti (kiekvienas turi savo gyvenime).

What Thanksgiving Means

Although there is some disagreement about exactly how this tradition started, it is generally accepted that the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621.  The residents of Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts had gone through a couple of very difficult winters.  It was not at all certain that their settlement would survive.  But the summer of 1621 was kind to them.  With the help of local Indians they had learned to plant and grow crops in the rocky soil and had a bountiful harvest.  They had stored away enough corn, vegetables, salted fish and smoked meat to last them through the winter.  Their governor, William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving that was to be shared with their Native American neighbors.  Several of the colonies (later to become states) observed this custom, but there was no unified Thanksgiving observation.

In 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, the bloodiest war in American history, President Abraham Lincoln called on the American people to celebrate a day of thanksgiving on the third Thursday of November.  It is interesting to note that this was one on the darkest times in American history, when brothers and friends found themselves on opposite sides of the battlefield, hundreds of thousands of men were dying, and the survival of America as a nation was very much in doubt.  But in this terrible time Lincoln asked the country to spend a day thinking about what they had in their lives to be thankful for.

This is what the day is supposed to mean.  It is always easy to let ourselves despair over our problems and focus on the things we will never have or never achieve.  But even in our darkest hours, there are pieces of our lives for which we need to be thankful.  For at least this one day in the year, we can remind ourselves that life is really worth living, that life is good.  On this one day at least, we can give thanks.
