Regina Nuttall

You might think about taking a driving vacation this spring or summer.  They can be economical and a lot of fun.  A little up-front planning can help make things go smoother and more trouble-free.

Consider joining an Auto Club

For a small annual fee you can get help planning your trip as well as emergency roadside assistance.  The largest and most popular club is the American Automobile Association (AAA), which has more than 48 million members.

Iankstinis planavimas pads ivengti daugybs- prast tokiais atvejais- nemalonum.

Pagalvokite apie tapim Auto klubo nariu

U nedidel metin mokest galite usitikrinti pagalb, atsitikus kelyje nelaimei. Didiausias ir populiriausias tokio pobdio klubas Amerikoje yra Amerikos Automobili Asociacija- the American Automobile Association (AAA), kuriai priklauso daugiau negu 48 milijonai nari.

www.aaaexchange.com

Patikrinkite automobil

  • Nustatykite oro kondicionieri  Economy reimu.

Darytini dalykai

Nesukoncentruokite viso dmesio vien turistines ymybes.

www.nationalparks.com

Jeigu rengiats apsistoti didmiestyje (a big city), tai nusipirkite kortel, vadinam Go Card, su kuria laisvai galsite eiti bet kur didesn rengin.

www.gocardusa.com

Kiti naudingi tinklapiai

www.

Jie labai greitai pradeda nuobodiauti ir verklenti. ia vlgi naudinga i anksto planuoti.

  • Leiskite vaikams irti kelions vadovus bei emlapius kol vairuojate. Leiskite jiems nusprsti kur geriausia sustoti ir k pamatyti.

  • simeskite automobil sportins rangos. Sustojimai parkuose ir greiti aidimai gali tinkamai sudeginti persikaupusi energij.

  • Supakuokite daug knyg, raomo popieriaus, raikli, korteli ir aidim. Turkite pasireng kelet siurpriz, jei padtis bekeliaujant darytsi tempta.

  • Leiskite kiekvienam pasikeiiant parinkti CD ar juosteles grojimui. Kiekvienas eimos narys turi pasiimti savo mgstamiausi.

  • Kelios knygos, raytos juostelse, gali visai eimai padti gerai praleisti laik.

Kur apsistoti

Jeigu js eimai reikia dviej viebuio kambari, tai geriau praykite visos patalpos  (a suite).

Galite pamginti gauti viebut itin pigiomis (ipardavimo) kainomis-  bargaining. Pairkite  www.takingthekids.com. ( Im sorry but that is too much for me.  Is there any way you can do a little better?)

Driving Vacations

Regina Nuttall

You might think about taking a driving vacation this spring or summer.  They can be economical and a lot of fun.  A little up-front planning can help make things go smoother and more trouble-free.

Consider joining an Auto Club

For a small annual fee you can get help planning your trip as well as emergency roadside assistance.  The largest and most popular club is the American Automobile Association (AAA), which has more than 48 million members.

www.aaaexchange.com

Get your car checked out

Several weeks before you go, bring your car to a good mechanic and tell him to check it out for a road trip.  It is well worth the money to minimize your chances of spending a day of your vacation in a repair shop.  He should check things like tires, belts and hoses, transmission, cooling system, and conditioning.  You should also change your oil before you go.

If your car is not in very good shape or is a real gas-guzzler think about renting.  If you spend a little time looking for a deal, it doesnt have to be expensive.  You could check out AAA or web sites like www.priceline.com that offer discounts.

Economize  on Gas

These days gas is more expensive than ever so it pays to drive as efficiently as possible.  A few simple things can make a noticeable difference.

  • Travel at a constant, moderate speed.  Driving too fast or speeding up and slowing down too often burns extra gas.

  • Set your air conditioner to the Economy setting.  It will take a little longer to cool the car down, but it puts less load on the engine.

  • Dont overload the car with luggage.  People always bring too much stuff on a trip.  Bringing less will mean less weight for the car to haul, as well as more room for you and your family.

Things to do

Dont just focus on the big tourist attractions.  There are often lots of small, local events happening where you can have a lot of fun without spending a ton of money.  Call the local tourist bureau or visitor center to find out what is going on.

If there are a few National Parks on your agenda, consider investing in a National Parks Pass. An annual fee of $50 admits your entire family to any National Park.

www.nationalparks.com

If youre staying in a big city, the Go Card gives you admission to many of its major attractions

www.gocardusa.com

www.AAAmaps.com: How to get there- and where to stop along way.

www.Momsminivan.com: Travel games and ideas for the whole family.

www.Cartalk.com: Importand car and driving information.

Traveling with kids

Kids like to travel for a little while.  But its easy for them to get bored and whiney.  A little planning can help preserve your sanity.

  • Let the kids look at the maps and guidebooks as you drive.  Let them help figure our where to stop and what to see.

  • Bring some sports equipment.  Stopping at a park for a quick game of Frisbee can burn off a lot of excess energy.

  • Pack plenty of books, writing paper, pens, cards and games.  Hold back a few surprises for those especially difficult moments.

  • Let everybody take turns picking the CDs or tapes being played.  Each member of the family should bring a few of their favorites.

  • A few books on tape can keep the whole family entertained for hours.

Where to stay

There are a lot of different hotel chains, most of which are pretty good.  There are websites like www.Tripadvisor.com that offer candid comments from other travelers.

When you have narrowed your list down to a few hotels, try www.orbitz.com  or   www.travelocity.com to see what kind of deals they offer, then check the hotels own website before booking. You can usually avoid the service fee and get a better cancellation policy.  If your family will need two hotel rooms, you might be better off booking a suite.  It will usually cost less than two rooms and they often have kitchenettes.

You can also try bargaining.  For tips see www.takingthekids.com.  This works best with small hotels, where you can talk directly with the manager.  When you call for a reservation, ask the price of the room.  Dont be afraid to politely say, Im sorry but that is too much for me.  Is there any way you can do a little better?  Especially if you will be staying for several days, you might be surprised how willing they are to compromise.  Of course it depends a lot on the time of year and how busy they are, but most places would rather give you a discount than have an empty room.
