Becoming Legal

Why didnt you write about the rally that took place in Chicago last week?  It was a very important thing for immigrants and you should have encouraged your readers to attend.

No, we did not encourage readers to attend.  Frankly we didnt pay much attention to it.  An event like that makes a big splash for a day or two and makes people feel like they are doing something, but in the long run it will make very little difference.  The problem of illegal immigrants in America is much more complicated than a simple demand for legalization can solve.  Americans are more and more recognizing that this is a situation that needs to be addressed, and they are pressuring their lawmakers to do something.  But doing something does not mean a large-scale amnesty.

Tapimas legaliais

Regina Nuttall

Kodl niekas i anksto neinformavo apie rengin, prajusi savait vykus ikagoje? Tai buvo labai naudingas dalykas imigrantams ir js privaljote imigrantus padrsinti jame dalyvauti.

Ne, mes neskatinome skaitytoj jame dalyvauti. Atvirai kalbant, nekreipme j didelio dmesio. Toks vykis kaip is, sujudina vandenis dienai ar dviems, leisdamas monms pasijausti tarsi nuveikus kak naudinga, taiau irint i laiko perpsektyvos, nedaug k pakeiia. Nelegali imigrant problema Amerikoje per daug sudtinga, kad j galima bt isprsti paprastu reikalavimu legalizuoti. Amerikieiai vis aikiau mato, kad situacij brandina tam tikri poreikiai, todl ir spaudia  statym leidjus k nors daryti. Taiau daryti k nors nereikia paskelbti visaapimani amnestij. Pats  odis amnestija politine prasme yra taps be galo nepopuliariu; bet kuris tokiu vardu paenklintas silom statym paketas pasmerktas numirti, vos pasirods. Imigrantai gals tiktis legalizacijos tik tuo atveju, jeigu is procesas nebus suprantamas kaip amnestija.

K tai reikia? Kiekvienas, troktantis tapti legaliu, privals tai usitarnauti. Pamginkite bent vien akimirk visk pairti Amerikos pilieio akimis. Imigrantai visais laikais buvo svarbs Amerikai, tebra ir iandien, bet ne taip, kaip daugum moni supranta. Imigrantai kvailina patys save, galvodami, kad  be j darbo Amerika neigyvent. Yra kitaip. Pilna toki, kurie pelnosi i nelegal darbo; bdami gods bei ykts jie nemoka tikr alg bei mokesi. Taigi, jokio nuostolio niekas nepatirt, tokiems asmenims inykus.

Norint suprasti kuo imigrantai naudingi Amerikai, pirmiausiai reikia suvokti, kad Amerikoje toks dalykas kaip tautyb (nationality) neegzistuoja. Amerika yra tauta todl, kad amerikieiai gyvena, apjungti bendros kultros, bendro poirio pasaul. mons yra atvyk i Anglijos, Vokietijos, Italijos, Airijos, Meksikos, Kinijos, Indijos ir imt kit viet. Kiekviena i i grupi su savimi yra atsineusi po savos kultros dalel ir tarsi sumetusi bendr katil, bet tai amerikiei kultros nepadar anglika ar kinietika. Vis t taut atstovai tapo amerikieiais. Per tam tikr laik jie sisavino daugybs kultr derin. Procesas tebevyksta.

Amerikieiai nori nors truput j kontroliuoti. Pasaulyje yra ymiai daugiau moni, troktani atvykti Amerik, negu i alis gali priimti. Kai, patek al nelegaliai arba pasilik vir vizos galiojimo laiko, ieina gatves rkdami: A esu ia, js privalote mane padaryti legaliu!, amerikieiai pasijunta nepatogiai. Jie nori patys turti galimyb sprsti k sileisti ir ko ne. Nelabai naudingais jie laiko tokius, kurie nenori mokytis angl kalbos, nieko neduoda Amerikos kultrai.

Imigrantai patys sau gali padti, parodydami, kad nori tapti amerikieiais, kad jie ia nra vien dl pinig. Vienadiene gatvs demonstracija tokio tikslo pasiekti nemanoma.

In fact the word amnesty is so politically unpopular that any bill with that label attached will be dead on arrival.  The only way legalization of immigrants will happen is if the process is not considered an amnesty.

What does that mean?  Basically it means that anybody who wants to become legal will have to earn the privilege.  For a moment, try to look at things from the viewpoint of an American citizen.  Immigrants have always been important to America, and remain so today, but not in the way many people think.  Immigrants like to fool themselves into thinking that without their labor, America would shrivel up and die.  This is not the case.  There are many individuals who profit from the work of illegals because they are too greedy to pay real wages or taxes, but if these people went broke it would be no loss.

To understand why immigrants are important to the US you must first understand that there is no such thing as an American nationality.  America is a nation because Americans are united by a common culture, a common way of looking at the world.  People came here from England, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, China, India, and a hundred other places.  Each of these groups brought pieces of their own cultures, and contributed them to the common stew-pot, but in the end, they did not remain English or Chinese or whatever.  They became Americans.  Over time they accepted this blend of many cultures as their own.  This continues today.

But Americans want to have some control over the process.  Around the world there are many more people who want to come to America than it can possibly accommodate.   When people enter the country illegally or overstay their visa, then stand up and say, Im here, you have to make me legal, Americans are uncomfortable.  They want to be able to decide who comes and who does not.  When people show no interest in learning the English language, or participating in American culture, Americans do not see much benefit in having them in the country.

Immigrants can help themselves by showing that they want to be American; that they are not here just to make money.  Demonstrating in the street for one day will not accomplish that goal.  Making a commitment to learning the language and culture of this country, and participating in its life will.  Those who are not willing to do this, those who complain and complain about what a terrible country this is, and what terrible people Americans are, need to take a long look in the mirror and ask themselves some hard questions.  Do they want to become Americans or do they simply want to become legal?  If they dont like the country and dont like the people in it, what do they really expect?
