Coming to the US as a doctor

We are physicians in Lithuania and would like to come to the US.  We have heard it is very difficult to do.  Can you give me any information on this?

A group of doctors from Lithuania

There is a way for foreign-trained doctors to come to the US, but it is complicated.  The first problem is that the US doesnt automatically recognize any non-US medical certifications.  You have to be certified in the US to practice medicine here.  The way that is normally done is to get a J-1 training visa.  This will allow you to work as a resident in a hospital.  In the US, residency is considered the last phase of a medical education.  When you finish residency, you are eligible to take the board exams and become a full physician.

Kaip atvykti JAV ir dirbti gydytoju

Mes esame vidaus lig gydytojai (physicians) Lietuvoje ir nortume atvykti  (imigruoti) JAV. Mes girdjome, kad labai sunku tai padaryti. Ar negaltume mums apie tai suteikti informacijos?

Grup gydytoj i Lietuvos

Tai leist Jums dirbti kaip rezidentu (as a resident) ligoninje.

Amerikoje rezidencija laikoma paskutin medicininio apmokymo stadija.

Baigus rezidencij, jums bus leidiama laikyti valstybinius egzaminus (the board exams) ir tapti pilnateisiais gydytojais.

Rezidentai gauna atlyginimus, nors ne visada paius didiausius (Amerikoje gydytojai labai daug udirba).

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/info/info_1294.html

Js negalite patys kreiptis vizos J-1.  JAV sponsorius (greiiausiai ligonin) turi jums padti. emiau ivardinti kontaktai vairiose valstijose, kurie pads jums susisiekti su ligonine, kuriai reikia js kvalifikacijos gydytojo.  Paraykite jiems, paaikindami savo praeit, praeit apmokym ir patirt  (your background, training and experience).

http://www.mdopts.org/

http://www.healthcare-jobs.org/healthcare_j1.html

Jeigu nusprsite pasinaudoti viena i i dviej nuorod, bkite atsargs. Jos lyg ir yra teisikai legalios organizacijos, bet mes neturime patikim ini apie jas.

Coming to the US as a doctor

I am a physician in Lithuania and would like to come to the US.  I have heard it is very difficult to do.  Can you give me any information on this?

A group of doctors

There is a way for foreign-trained doctors to come to the US, but it is complicated.  The first problem is that the US doesnt automatically recognize any non-US medical certifications.  You have to be certified in the US to practice medicine here.  The way that is normally done is to get a J-1 training visa.  This will allow you to work as a resident in a hospital.  In the US, residency is considered the last phase of a medical education.  When you finish residency, you are eligible to take the board exams and become a full physician.  Residents get paid, although they may not get huge salaries.  When you finish residency, and have passed the board exams, you will be certified to practice in the US, but here is where it gets complicated.  Since the original purpose of a J-1 visa was to train people for working in their home countries, you would ordinarily be required to return to your home country for a minimum of two years before applying for a job in the US.  However, in the case of doctors, if you are willing to take a job in an underserved area (an area where there are not enough doctors) you can get a waiver of the two-year requirement and stay in the US to work.  Most of these places are in smaller cities and rural areas.

Here is a website that explains some of the details.

http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/info/info_1294.html

You cannot apply for a J-1 visa by yourself.  A US sponsor (probably a hospital) must help you.  Listed below are contacts in the various states that might be able to put you in touch with a hospital that needs someone with your skills.  Write to them, describing your background, training and experience.  Say that you are interested in coming to the US to practice medicine and that you are willing to work in an underserved area.

There are also companies that will (for a fee) help find you a J1 job in the US. Here are a couple of links:

http://www.mdopts.org/

http://www.healthcare-jobs.org/healthcare_j1.html

If you choose to use one of the above links, be careful.  These appear to be legitimate organizations, but we dont have any first-hand knowledge of them.
