Coming to America

I am 20 years old and have a green card.  I am planning to immigrate to America.  How can I know where to live, how to find a job and an apartment?  I am also thinking that after a while, I might go to school in business management.  I speak good English.

The first thing most Lithuanians dont understand about America is how big and diverse it is.  Most newcomers go to a particular city because they have friends or relatives there.  If this is not the case with you and you have no idea where in this country you are going to live, it would be a good idea to do a little research first.  Ask yourself some basic questions.

Emigruoju Amerik

Esu dvideimtmetis ir turiu ali Kortel. Planuoju emigruoti Amerik.

Koks klimatas  labiausiai tenkint? O gal patinka kartis ir nebenori i viso niekad regti iemos? Pamgink patraukti ias valstijas: Florida, Georgia, Arizona arba pietin (Southern) California.

Koks peizaas mieliausias?  Nori gyventi arti vandenyno? Ar kalnuose? O gal labiau patinka mikai, eerai ir ups? Yra mgstani dykumas- Amerikoje daug visoki viet- paiam vairiausiam skoniui.

Kokio dydio bendruomenje nortum gyventi?  Nori gyventi didmiestyje (city), mieste (small city) ar maame miestelyje (small town)? K mgsti veikti?

Kokie kiti ypatumai atrodo vertingi?

http://www.infoplease.com/states.html

http://newslink.org/statnews.html

Atsidrei ypatingame savo gyvenimo laikotarpyje. Tau atsiveria paios vairiausios galimybs. Neskubk priimti sprendimo. Skirk tam pakankamai laiko, kad suvoktum ko i tikrj nori. Amerikoje- tiesiogine odio prasme- egzistuoja imtai vairiausi gyvenimo bd (lifestyles).

Jeigu nori studijuoti, tai kiekviename didmiestyje rasi ger mokykl. Taiau mintis studijuoti vadyb, ko gero, nra gera. Vadybininkai Amerikoje, ypa emesniuose lygiuose, beveik niekad neturi verslo vadybininko (menederio) diplomo. Daniausiai tai mons, imok vadybininkauti (perprat t verslo srit) i vidaus.

Tu udavei itin plat klausim ir is atsakymas- savaime aiku- tra didelio atsakymo pradia. Nesivarydamas parayk mums vl, kai nors truputl aikiau suprasi k, gyvendamas Amerikoje, nortum veikti.

What kind of climate do you prefer?  Few places in the US have the kind of winters you experience in Lithuania, but the northern tier of states do have quite a bit of cold weather.  Some nice cold weather states might be Vermont or Minnesota.  Or maybe you like hot weather and never want to see winter again.  You could try Florida, Georgia, Arizona or Southern California.

What kind of landscape do you like?  Do you want to live near the ocean?  In the mountains?  Do you like forests, lakes and rivers?  Do you want to live in the desert?

What size community do you want to live in?  Do you want to live in a big city, a small city, a small town?  What do you like to do?  If you like restaurants, clubs and theaters, look at the larger cities.  If you like hunting, fishing and hiking in the woods, think about places where you can do that kind of thing.

What special features would be important to you?  Would you like to live in a university town?  Do you want to live near a major airport so you can travel more easily?  Do you want to live somewhere with a large Lithuanian community?

Here is a website that will give you some basic facts and figures about the various states in the US.

http://www.infoplease.com/states.html

If you are like most people, you will need to find a job pretty soon.  Here is a website that has links to newspapers all over the country.  Look at the job listings to get an idea of what kind of work is available in any area you are interested in.  You can also look at listings for apartment rentals.

http://newslink.org/statnews.html

You are at a very exciting time in your life.  All kinds of possibilities are open to you.  Dont rush your decision.  Take time and think about what you really want.  America has literally hundreds of different lifestyles.

If you want to go to college, there are good schools in almost any major city.  But your idea of studying management is probably not a good one.  Managers in American businesses, especially at the lower levels almost never have degrees in business management.  They are more often people who have learned the business from the inside.  For example, you might get a job on an assembly line, then after a while get promoted to a shift supervisor if you show that you are a good worker and that you are interested in it.  You might take some night courses in business at an appropriate time to learn specific skills you will need for your next promotion.

Going to college can be a very good idea, but you should be aware that it could be expensive.  If you dont have the money, you can take courses nights and weekends, and later apply these courses toward your degree.

You have asked a very big question and this is obviously only the start of an answer.  Feel free to write again when you have a little more specific idea about what you want to do.
