10 Year Visa

I have a ten-year visa to visit the US.  Do I have to travel every year to keep it valid like I would if I had a green card?

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about what a visa is.  It is simply a statement that American embassy officials have given you permission to enter the US for a specific period of time, in your case ten years.  This means that you can come to the US any time during that ten years.  When you arrive, you will be given a small card called an I-94 document that is your actual permission to be in the country.  The I-94 will have an expiration date on it that may be much earlier than the date on your visa.  The date on the I-94 is the date by which you must leave the country.

10 met viza

A turiu 10 met viz lankytis JAV (iduota Lietuvoje, JAV ambasadoje).

Data ant kortels  I-94 yra data, nurodanti kada privalote ivykti i alies. Pavyzdiui, js viza gali galioti iki 2010 m. kovo 1 d., kai tuo tarpu  I-94 galiojimo laikas baigsis 2006 m. balandio 1 d. Taiau jums bus leidiama atskristi Amerik vl, kol galios js viza  (iki 2010). Jeigu i alies (i Amerikos) neivyksite iki nurodytos datos ant  I-94 kortels, js viza pasidarys nebegaliojania ir JAV nebebsite leidiamas, nebent gautumte nauj viz. Priklausomai nuo to, kaip ilgai pasilikote vir ant I- 94 nurodyto laiko (datos), priklausys kiek ilgai jums reiks laukti, kol gausite nauj viz (Amerikos ambasadoje Lietuvoje)- kartais tris, kartais deimt met.

Kai turite ali kortel, esate laikomas nuolatiniu JAV gyventoju. Tai reikia, kad js i tikrj gyvenate JAV. Usienyje pasiliks ilgiau negu 1 metus, aikiai parodote, kad Amerikos nelaikote savo namais. Amerikos vyriausyb atims ali kortel, jeigu negyvensite ia.

For example, your visa might expire on March 1, 2010, but your I-94 might expire April 1, 2006.  That would mean that you must return home by April 1.  However you would be allowed to travel again until the expiration date on your visa (2010).  If you do not leave by the date on your I-94 card, your visa will become invalid and you will not be allowed to enter the US again unless you are granted a new visa.  Depending on how long you overstayed, you will have to wait either three or ten years before you will be able to get another one.

There is no requirement about when you use your visa.  If you wait nine years to travel, it should still be perfectly valid.  If you have any doubts, contact the US embassy and ask if it is still good.  A green card is different.  When you have a green card, you are considered a permanent resident of the US.  That means you actually live in the US.  When you stay abroad for more than a year, it becomes obvious that you dont really consider the US your home.  The American government will take away your green card if you dont live here.

It is important to remember that a visa by itself does not guarantee that you will be admitted into the US.  In reality, the visa only gives you the right to show up at the border and ask to be admitted.  It is up to the border officials to give you the I-94 that allows you to enter the country.  While the vast majority of people with valid visas are allowed in, a few are rejected for various reasons.  If your circumstances have changes since you got your visa (for example, if you have been convicted of a crime), it is possible that you will be refused entry.
