Vitamin D and Cancer

 

For a long time scientists have known that Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb and properly use the calcium in our diets to maintain strong bones and teeth.  But in recent years evidence has been mounting that Vitamin D is even more important than we ever suspected.  In an article in the December 2005 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, researchers from several major medical centers reviewed over sixty studies on the relationship between Vitamin D and the rates of various cancers.  They concluded that people getting enough Vitamin D  have a significantly lower chance of getting cancers of the breast, prostate, colon and ovaries.

Vitaminas D ir vins ligos

 

Jau seniai mokslininkai ino, kad vitaminas D btinas knui, nes jo dka i maisto teisingai sisavinamas kalcis, stiprinantis ms dantis ir kaulus. Taiau paskutiniais metais padaugjo rodym, kad vitaminas D yra kur kas naudingesnis negu galjome tiktis. Vitamin D and Cancer

 

For a long time scientists have known that Vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb and properly use the calcium in our diets to maintain strong bones and teeth.  But in recent years evidence has been mounting that Vitamin D is even more important than we ever suspected.  In an article in the December 2005 issue of the American Journal of Public Health, researchers from several major medical centers reviewed over sixty studies on the relationship between Vitamin D and the rates of various cancers.  They concluded that people getting enough Vitamin D  have a significantly lower chance of getting cancers of the breast, prostate, colon and ovaries.

 

Current standards recommend that we get between 200 and 400 IU of Vitamin D per day.  It is beginning to look like this is too low.  Most of the researchers conducting these studies suggest increasing the amount to close to 1000 IU per day, but so far there have not been any definitive studies done to exactly determine the best amount.  Dr. Cedric Garland of the University of California, who has been studying the question since the 1970s claims that 1000 IU per day, would cut the rate of colon cancer by 50%.

 

Vitamin D also helps regulate the immune system, and helps prevent autoimmune diseases like Type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.  People with high levels of Vitamin D even show better heart and lung function.

 

Vitamin D is known as the Sunshine Vitamin because our bodies manufacture it when our skin is exposed to direct sunlight.  Dermatologists have long preached that we never go out in the sun without sunblock, but now some other doctors, and even a few dermatologists, are starting to recommend that we spend 10 15 minutes three times a week in direct sunlight without protective clothing or sunblock.

 

In the winter however, the sun is too weak in most northern countries to stimulate the production of Vitamin D, so we should be sure to get enough in our diets.  The best dietary sources are fortified milk, whole eggs, and fatty fish such as salmon or tuna.  You can also take supplements of Vitamin D or fish oil.
