The holidays are over and many of us have put on a few pounds that we would like to get rid of.  At this time of year, lots of people are thinking about diets.  Unfortunately diets by themselves really dont work very well.  There are two sides to the weight loss equation.  One is the number of calories you take in; the other is the number you burn.  If you burn more that you take in, you lose weight.  When we starve ourselves, our bodys metabolism tends to slow down.  The body doesnt understand we are trying to lose weight.  It interprets the reduced food intake as famine and tries desperately to make its reserves (stored as fat) last as long as possible.  To lose weight we need to find a way to increase metabolism and the number of calories the body burns.

Green Tea and Weight Loss

 

The holidays are over and many of us have put on a few pounds that we would like to get rid of.  At this time of year, lots of people are thinking about diets.  Unfortunately diets by themselves really dont work very well.  There are two sides to the weight loss equation.  One is the number of calories you take in; the other is the number you burn.  If you burn more that you take in, you lose weight.  When we starve ourselves, our bodys metabolism tends to slow down.  The body doesnt understand we are trying to lose weight.  It interprets the reduced food intake as famine and tries desperately to make its reserves (stored as fat) last as long as possible.  To lose weight we need to find a way to increase metabolism and the number of calories the body burns.

 

One way to do this of course is by exercising.  When we work our muscles, they need fuel.  The only way to provide this fuel is by burning calories.  Regular light exercise during a diet can keep the body burning calories and help make your diet more effective.

 

Another thing that helps boost metabolism is green tea.  A study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland several years ago studied the effects of green tea on healthy young males who ate a typical western diet.  For six weeks they were given capsules containing either green tea extract with caffeine, caffeine alone, or a placebo.  Three times during the study, their Energy Expenditure (number of calories burned in a 24 hour period) and RQ (A measure of how the body uses carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) were measured.  The subjects taking green tea had a significantly higher EE, meaning they burned more total calories, and a lower RQ, meaning that more of those calories were produced by burning stored fat. 

 

Just as important, they saw no increase in heart rate in the green tea group.  Other diet supplements contain stimulants such as ephedra, which was recently banned in the US.  They affect heart rate and can cause serious problems like heart attacks.  The green tea extract does not appear to have any of those kinds of side effects.

 

Green tea also helps out your diet in several other ways.  It blocks absorption of fats and carbohydrates in the digestive system.  This means that pass straight through the body without even being digested.  It also helps suppress appetite so you will not be quite so tormented by hunger pangs.

 

If you want to get the full metabolic effect from green tea, it is not possible to get it from drinking tea.  The metabolism-boosting chemicals, called catechins, are found in very small quantities.  However you can buy capsules containing green tea extract at any health food store.
