Antibiotic Abuse

There is a common misconception that when you get sick, you should take an antibiotic.  This is wrong for several reasons.  First of all, the chances it will do you any good are very small.  Most of our common illnesses, like colds and flu are viruses and antibiotics have no effect on viruses.  Antibiotics are useful against bacterial infection, but not viruses.  Taking an antibiotic when you have a cold does nothing to make the cold go away faster.  Many people will say that they always take antibiotics for a cold and swear that it makes the cold go away.  Unfortunately, this isn’t true.  An untreated cold usually last about two weeks.  An effective course of antibiotics is usually 7 – 10 days.  People usually start taking antibiotics several days after they first start feeling sick, so by the time a person has taken the full course, the two weeks is up and the cold has gone away naturally.

Yra paplitæs neteisingas supratimas, kad sergant reikia naudoti antibiotikus. Pirmiausia, nedidelë tikimybë, kad tai kaip nors pagerins sveikatà.  Daugybæ labiausiai paplitusiø ligø, tokiø kaip gripas ir perðalimai, sukelia virusai, o antiobiotikai virusø neveikia.  Antibiotikai gali padëti nugalëti bakterijø sukeltas infekcijas, bet ne virusø. Perðalæ griebdamiesi antiobiotikø niekaip nepagreitiname sveikimo proceso. Taèiau nemaþai þmoniø prisiekinëja, kad jie visuomet naudoja antibiotikus perðalimams gydyti ir kad jie visuomet padeda. Deja, tai netiesa.  Negydomas perðalimas laikosi panaðiai apie dvi savaites. Efektyvus antibiotikø kursas paprastai tæsiasi  7 – 10 dienø. Daþniausiai þmonës pradeda naudoti antibiotikus jau praëjus kelioms dienoms po to, kai pasijauèia sergantys, taigi, kai asmuo baigia pilnà antibiotikø kursà, antra savaitë bûna besibaigianti ir perðalimas natûraliai beatsitraukiantis.

 

Net jeigu kankina bakterinë infekcija, labai naudinga þinoti kokia bûtent tai bakterija, jei norite gauti tikrai tam atvejui tinkamiausius antibiotikus. Skirtingi antibiotikai skirtingai veikia ávairiø rûðiø bakterijas. Kartais naudojamos antibiotikø kombinacijos.  Jeigu jau pradëjote juos naudoti, tai privalote naudoti visà nurodytà laikà, laikydamiesi instrukcijø. Jokiu bûdu negalite jø susigalvoti patys. Tai- iðmananèio gydytojo kompetencija.

 

Ne visos bakterijos þalingos. Mûsø skrandyje ir þarnyne pilna bakterijø, kurios padeda perdirbti ir suvirðkinti maistà. Kai kurios gamina vitaminà K, bûtinà normaliam kraujo kreðëjimui. Kitos padeda kontroliuoti þalingø bakterijø ir mieliø lygius. Pavyzdþiui,  bakterija, angliðkai vadinama lactobacilli, kuri randama raugintuose kopûstuose  (sauerkraut) ir jogurtuose, padeda iðvengti pavojingø infekcijø, kurias sukelia bakterijos bei virusai. (Kokius jogurtus pirkti, skaityikite paspaudæ Ðaltiniai/Sveikas maistas). Bakerija, vardu Bifidobacteria, kaunasi su kitos formos bakterija, vadinama  Clostridium, gaminanèia nuodingà medþiagà, sukelianèià iðeinamosios (tuðtinimosi) þarnos vëþá. Naudojant antibiotikus tuomet, kai nëra bûtina, praþudomos gerosios bakterijos ir skatinamas blogøjø augimas.

 

Vien tik blogu þodþiu prisimenu tuos Lietuvos  daktarus, kurie  ne tik suaugusius, bet ir naujagimius, ávairaus amþiaus vaikus ðerë tonomis rusiðkø antibiotikø. Tuo metu, o ir vëliau, Lietuvai atgavus nepriklausomybæ, ne daþnai kitokiø buvo galima sutikti. Vis girdþiu, kad ir ðiandien kai kurie gydytojai Lietuvoje serganèius gripu skiria antibiotikus, juos daug kas naudoja savarankiðkai. Jie tebëra laikomi stebuklingai gydanèiais nuo visø ligø, todël ið Lietuvos siunèiami, skraidinami Amerikoje gyvenantiems giminaièiams, draugams. Lietuvos vaistinëse  pardavinëjami be receptø. Amerikoje jokio antibiotiko be gydytojo iðraðyto recepto neámanoma nusipirkti.

 

Egzistuoja dar viena, rimtesnë problema- bakterijos turi tendencijà pasidaryti atspariomis antibiotikams. Kuo daþniau vienos rûðies antibiotikas naudojamas, tuo jis darosi maþiau efektyvus. 1944 metais penicilinas tapo pirmuoju, plaèiai prieinamu visuomenei. Pirmoji jam atspari bakterija aptikta 1945 m. Kitas antibiotikas- methicillin- buvo sukurtas 1960 metais.  Ir vël teprireikë vienø metø, kad atsirastø pirmoji methicillin’ui atspari bakterija.  Naudodami antibiotikus perðalimams ir gripui gydyti vien skatinate bakterijas pasidaryti atspariomis, kurios vëliau gali tapti itin pavojingomis.

There is a common misconception that when you get sick, you should take an antibiotic.  This is wrong for several reasons.  First of all, the chances it will do you any good are very small.  Most of our common illnesses, like colds and flu are viruses and antibiotics have no effect on viruses.  Antibiotics are useful against bacterial infection, but not viruses.  Taking an antibiotic when you have a cold does nothing to make the cold go away faster.  Many people will say that they always take antibiotics for a cold and swear that it makes the cold go away.  Unfortunately, this isn’t true.  An untreated cold usually last about two weeks.  An effective course of antibiotics is usually 7 – 10 days.  People usually start taking antibiotics several days after they first start feeling sick, so by the time a person has taken the full course, the two weeks is up and the cold has gone away naturally.

 

Even if you have a bacterial infection, it is important to know exactly what bacteria you have in order to prescribe the correct antibiotic.  Different ones are effective with different bacteria.  Sometimes a combination of antibiotics is called for.  If you are taking an antibiotic, you must take it for the correct amount of time. You can’t figure all this out for yourself.  Only a knowledgeable doctor can make that determination.

 

Not all bacteria are harmful.  Our stomach and intestines are full of bacteria that help us process and digest food.  Some manufacture Vitamin K, which is necessary for proper clotting of blood.  Others actually help control the levels of harmful bacteria and yeasts.  For example like lactobacilli which is found in sauerkraut and yogurt helps prevent harmful infections by bacteria or viruses.  Bifidobacteria fights against another form of bacteria called Clostridium which produces a toxin that has been connected with cancer of the bowel.  Taking unnecessary antibiotics can kill these good bacteria and actually encourage the growth of harmful ones.

 

I shudder to remember the Soviet so-called doctors who filled not only adults, but babies and children with tons and tons of Russian antibiotics.  At this time, it was very difficult to find a doctor who thought differently.  This attitude still very much exists among Lithuanians today.  Since you can buy antibiotics in Lithuania without a prescription, which you cannot do in America, they are one of the most popular items that Lithuanians send to their relatives abroad.

 

There is also a larger problem, and that is the tendency of bacteria to develop resistance to antibiotics.  The more a particular antibiotic is used, the less effective it becomes.  Penicillin, the first antibiotic became publicly available in 1944.  The first resistant bacteria appeared in 1945.  The next antibiotic discovered was methicillin, introduced in 1960.  Again, it took about a year for the first methicillin resistant bacteria to emerge.  Taking antibiotics for colds and flu only encourages bacteria to become resistant and makes those bacteria more dangerous later.
