Bird Flu Update

It seems that every time we turn on the news there is more information on the spread of bird flu.  Some people are beginning to panic, to think this is the end of the world.  Certainly bird flu is a very serious disease for birds.  Millions of birds have been infected, mostly is Asia, but now in Europe and Africa too.  Probably later this year it will spread to North and South America.  How much do we need to worry about this?  What is the real danger to our families and us?

Paintis su virus ir ypa gripo prigimtimi praveria, kovojant su j protrkio pasekmmis. inoma, kad nra joki garantij. J niekada nra, bet visada verta bti pasiruousiems.

 

Vienas i pai geriausi dalyk, kokius tik galite padaryti, tai stengtis imunin sistem ilaikyti kaip manoma stipresn. Js knui duotos netiktinos galimybs kautis su liga ir j nugalti, jums belieka jam kuo daugiau padti.  Darykite tai, k jau seniai inote esant naudingu. Daug manktinkits. Supraskite, kad gripas paprastai plinta fizinio kontakto bdu. Kiekvienas ino, kad iaudjimas veid gali perneti lig, taiau didesn dalis moni usikreia per rankas. Jie palieia jau ukrst paviri, o po to savo akis, nosis ar burnas, perkeldami virus savo knus. Jeigu epidemija pratrks, tai stenkits kaip manydami vengti vie viet. Pagalvokite, ko gali prireikti toki keli savaii bgyje ir pasistenkite tai turti po ranka.  Apsirpinkite pagrindiniais medikamentais, tokiais kaip aspirinas, ibuprofenas, viduriavim stabdantys vaistai (anti-diarrheal medicine), jodas ir bintai.  sitikinkite, kad turite pakankamai vandens ir negendanio maisto (saus pusryi, konserv, rieut, ryi, makaron). Pasidkite po ranka kelis proektorius ir elementais varom radij su krva atsargini element (batteries). Jeigu turite vaik ar namini gyvn, atitinkamai pasirpinkite vaistais, maistu ir kt. atsargomis jiems. Nekaupkite antibiotik. Jie neturi jokio poveikio virusams, o gripas kaip tik yra virusas. 

 

Svarbiausia, stenkits gauti kuo naujesn informacij ir vieskits. Nepanikuokite. Nra tam jokios prieasties. Pasaulyje nuolat pilna pavoj, bet mes privalome gyventi savo gyvenimus, juos nekreipdami perdto dmesio. Mes neinome kada epidemija prasiver ir ar i viso taip atsitiks.

Bird Flu Update

It seems that every time we turn on the news there is more information on the spread of bird flu.  Some people are beginning to panic, to think this is the end of the world.  Certainly bird flu is a very serious disease for birds.  Millions of birds have been infected, mostly is Asia, but now in Europe and Africa too.  Probably later this year it will spread to North and South America.  How much do we need to worry about this?  What is the real danger to our families and us?

 

The truth is that nobody knows.  As things stand today, there is almost no danger to humans.  There are still only somewhere between 100 and 200 documented human cases worldwide, almost all of whom work on poultry farms.  There have been a handful of cases where human-to-human transmission is suspected, but even if these are legitimate it is clear that the virus does not yet spread at all easily from one person to another.  There have also been a couple of cases reported in Europe where cats have been infected, probably by eating sick birds. 

 

So why all the fuss?  Scientists are worried because viruses mutate very easily.  If this virus does mutate into a form that can easily spread from one human to another, things could get serious very fast.  We now know that the 1918 influenza pandemic that killed millions of people around the world was a form of bird flu.  Could the 1918 situation happen again?

 

It could, but this is not 1918.  At that time Europe was in the middle of an all-out war.  Millions of people were starving or living in conditions that left them wide open for infection.  Nobody even knew what viruses were at that time, much less how they spread or how to treat them.  Learning some basic facts about viruses in general and influenza in particular can help you deal with an outbreak when it comes.  Of course there are no guarantees.  There never are, but it makes sense to prepare yourself.

 

One of the most important things you can do is to keep your immune system as strong as possible.  Your body has a tremendous ability to fight off disease and you need to give it all the help you can.  Do all the things you already know you should do.  Get a lot of exercise.  Eat a nutritious diet, including lots of fruits and vegetables.  Take vitamins.  Get enough sleep.  Dont smoke.  Smokers contract influenza more often than non-smokers, and once they have it, they are more likely to die.  If the disease starts spreading among humans, there will be massive public vaccination campaigns.  Get inoculated as early as you can.

 

Understand that influenza spreads mostly through physical contact.  Everybody knows that a sneeze in the face can transmit disease, but most people contract it through their hands.  They touch a contaminated surface, and then touch their eyes or nose or mouth, introducing the virus into their bodies.  If a pandemic occurs, stay out of public places as much as possible.  Wash your hands frequently, and make a real effort to avoid touching your face with your hands. 

 

Take some basic steps now to prepare for a possible pandemic.  If people around you start getting sick, the best thing you can do is stay at home for a while.  Figure out what you would need to live for several weeks and make sure you have those things on hand.  Stockpile basic medical supplies like aspirin, ibuprofen, anti-diarrheal medicine, iodine, and bandages.  Make sure you have plenty of water and non-perishable foods like dry cereals, canned goods, nuts, rice, or pasta.  Get a couple of flashlights and a battery-powered radio with plenty of batteries.  If you have a baby or a pet, make sure you have the proper supplies for them.  Do not stock up on antibiotics.  They have no effect on viruses and influenza is a virus.

 

Most importantly, keep yourself informed and educated.  Dont panic.  There is no reason to.  There are always dangers in the world, but we need to live our lives in spite of them.  We dont know when or even if a pandemic will occur.
