An Invalid in Lithuania Today

Aldona Paukstyte writes that she was injured while traveling in America and returned to Lithuania hardly able to walk.  She still felt happy that she could get around at all, and hoped that Lithuanians view of invalids had changed while she was gone.  Unfortunately she found that it had not.  People in the streets looked at her with scorn.  She had not expected to feel like such an outcast because people in America had never looked at her so unkindly.  If they paid attention at all it was only to ask if they could help somehow.  Very quickly she learned how to grab onto a tree or wall when kids came by because they would knock her to the ground.  She started to be afraid to take public transportation because everybody was impatient with her.  Drivers would even close the door on her before she was entirely inside.

Invalidas Lietuvoje iandien

Aldona Pauktyt

Toks  jau  nenuspjamas  tas likimas.

Atsisuk  iri  kaip  a negrakiai  lubuoju.  Pasijutau  kakaip  nejaukiai. Grau  namo  ir  su  palengvjimu  usidariau  namuose.  Pajutau,  kad  pati gdijuosi  savo negalios.Prisiminiau  save  Amerikoje; ten man  ir    galva  neateidavo,  kad  a  kitokia.

Pati  neinau.

Materialija  prasme  pokyiai  jauiami, taiau  moraline  dar  nelabai.  Nepageidaujami  ie  mons  linksmesniuose  sambriuose, juos vengiama  darbinti, odiu,   pageidaujama, kad  jie  nelst    akis.

Jie  ir  nelenda...A  irgi pertvarkiau savo  laisvalaik  -  tiesiog  nustojau  vaikioti ten,  kur  man- Lietuvos visuomens akimis irint-   nepritiko  eiti.

An Invalid in Lithuania Today

Aldona writes that she was injured while traveling in America and returned to Lithuania hardly able to walk.

In America she had seen that people with disabilities go everywhere and do everything, but in Lithuania she began to avoid public places because she felt unwelcome.  She found the Lithuanians view of people with disabilities had not improved a bit, maybe even got worse.  It seems like people there feel that their own lives are difficult enough without having to make accommodations for the disabled.  It is our tradition to look at the disabled as though their problems were a result of some moral failing and it is all their own fault.  Of course there are a few exceptions.  Some new buildings are built so that handicapped people can use them, but these are material changes, and they dont reflect any change in peoples attitudes.  We had hoped that becoming a member of the European Union would help attitudes to change, but it didnt happen.  Nobody ever teaches that life can change in an instant, and anybody could find themselves in a bad place like this.  Disabled people are not welcomed at social occasions, they are not hired for jobs.  They are expected to stay out of sight and let everybody else pretend they dont exist.  And that is what they try to do.

Today, after a long time, Aldona looks healthy if you dont look too closely.  She has come a long way from where she was.  But this feeling of being unwanted has not gone away and maybe it never will.  She still has the habit of choosing when and how she does things based on how it is best for an invalid.
