Social Security Benefits

My husband is 60 and I am 50.  He doesnt want me to get a job, but I worry about my retirement.  He says I will get Social Security through him.  Is this true?

Yes it is.  If your husband has worked at least ten years at a job paying into Social Security he will qualify for benefits.  When he retires and starts to collect his Social Security, he will get a check every month.  The amount of that check will vary depending on how long he worked, how much he paid into SS, and his age at retirement.  When you reach retirement age, if he is still alive and you are still married, you will start to receive benefits at 50% of his rate.  If he dies, you will be eligible to receive full SS benefits in your name.  Exactly how this works is a little complicated, but we will try to make it as clear as possible.

Social Security pinigai

Mano vyrui 60, o man 50.

Jeigu js vyras maiausiai deimt met dirbo darb, mokdamas Social Security, jis bus pripaintas galiniu naudotis. Ijs pensij ir pradjs gauti savo  Social Security, jis gaus ek kiekvien mnes. ekio dydis priklausys nuo to, kaip ilgai jis dirbo, kiek mokjo mokesi SS, kokio amiaus ijo pensij. Jei js sulauksite pensijinio amiaus, o js vyras bus dar gyvas, tai pradsite gauti 50 proc. jam priklausanios SS sumos (irgi gausite kas mnes ek, tik perpus maesn, negu gaus js vyras). Jam mirus, pradsite savo vardu gauti jam priklausiusi SS piln sum (kol bsite gyva). iek tiek kebloka iaikinti vis veikimo princip, bet pasistengsime.

Vyrui mirus, galite kreiptis nals pensijos (survivors benefit), kuri bus apskaiiuojama remiantis 100% js vyro pilna imokos suma.

Taiau jums tokiu atveju (mirus eks-vyrui) nepriklausys nals pensija.

There is a full monthly amount that depends on how much your husband earned during his working life.  Lets say that amount is $1800 a month for your husband.  The maximum spouses benefit is 50% of that or $900.  The actual amount you are eligible to collect will vary depending on exactly how old you are when you start collecting benefits.  If you are 50 now, you were probably born in 1956.  That means your full retirement age is 66 years and 4 months.  If you start collecting at that age, you will receive the full $900 a month.  However, it is possible to start receiving benefits earlier than that age at a reduced monthly amount.  You can start getting payments as early as 62 years old, but you will not get the full amount.

If your husband dies, you can then apply for a survivors benefit, which would be based on 100% of your husbands full benefit amount.  Again however, if you start collecting before your full retirement age, you will get a smaller amount each month.  If he dies when you are 66 years and 4 months or older you will get 100% of his benefit amount.

If you get divorced after having been married for ten years or longer you will qualify for the 50% benefit exactly as you would have if you were still married.  However you would not be eligible for a survivors benefit if your ex-husband should die.  You will however still be eligible for the 50% spouses benefit.
